Allah calls: ‘Is there anyone who is asking for forgiveness so that I can forgive them, who is in distress that I may relieve his distress, is there anyone who needs (rizq) food that I may give to him’.
The night between 14th and 15th day of the eighth month Shabaan of the Hijri calender (Islamic calender) is denoted as Shab E Baraat.
The word ‘Shab’ is a Farsi word which means ‘night’ and the word ‘baraat’ as an Arabic word means ‘freedom’, and in Farsi it means ‘fortune’. So, the ‘Shab E Baraat’ means ‘night of freedom’ from sins, ‘night of fortune’.
“And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him, He will send you(from the sky) abundant rain, and add strength to your strength, so do not turn away as Mujrimoon(criminals, disbelievers in the oneness of Allah). [Surah Hood 11:52].
On this night of 15 shabaan, people who belong to the religion of Islam believes to pray Allah Almighty for their forgiveness and blessings. This night is also denoted as ‘night of forgiveness’ and ‘night of freedom’ as people pray for their forgiveness and blessings to get rid of sins.
People perform prayers whole night, have fasting on the day following night (15th shaban), recite verses of Quran – holy book.
It is believed that on Shab E Baraat, people ask for their mercy as the Almighty Allah writes their destiny for the upcoming period, after taking into account of the past actions.
The night of 15th Shabaan is denoted by various names such as Shab E Baraat, Lailatul Baraat, Night Of Salvation, Night Of Forgiveness, Night Of Records.
