RAMZAN – A TRIAL OF TRANSFORMATION.

Sameena Kousar

Fasting is a common practise performed in every religion. Fasting refers to abstaining from food and drink.

RAMZAN is the month of fasting for the followers of Islam. It is the ninth month of Hijri (Islamic) calender. It is considered as the spiritual month in the Islam.Ramzan is the month to empty the stomach and feed the soul.

Ramzan holds the significant place in the religion of Islam as the Quran – holy book was first revealed in this month.
O BELIEVERS ! FAST IS PRESCRIBED FOR YOU AS IT WAS FOR THOSE BEFORE YOU SO THAT YOU MAY WARD OFF EVIL. (FAST) A CERTAIN NUMBER OF DAYS (CHAPTER 2 VERSE NO 182-183 QURAN).

Muslims observe fasts during the sacred month ramzan from fajr (holy prayer in morning) by doinsuhur( pre dawn food) till maghrib (holy prayer in evening) by doing iftar (dusk meal). People abstain themselves from having eatables during their period of fasting and breaks down their fast by having dates.

Fasting in ramzan is mandatory for every individual who has attained the age of 12 years. Some of the exceptions are their for whom fasting is not compulsory such as the person who has not attained the age of 12, person who is insane, ill, or the one who is travelling.
Fasting in Islam is not only about abstaining from eatables but also abstaining from the prohibited activities.

THE PROPHET MOHAMMAD (PBUH) SAID, “WHOEVER OBSERVES THE FAST DURING THE MONTH OF RAMADAN, BELIEVING IN ALLAH AND SEEKING HIS REWARDS, WILL HAVE HIS PAST SINS FORGIVEN”.
Ramzan is the month of blessings, full of mercy. People seek forgiveness for the sins they have committed which are ommitted in the Islam. People too fasts to seek nearness to Allah.
People recite Quran, offer prayers which are obligatory, give charity during the month of ramzan.

Namaz E Tarawih is the night prayer offered during the month of ramzan every night. People even offer Namaz E Tahajjud during the third phase of night.

RAMZAN is the month of transformation as it abstains not only from eating but from each of the prohibited activities. The practices in the month of ramzan makes a soul pure and pious. Fasting also holds the scientific benefit. Fasting helps in detoxifying the body.

People put more efforts in following the teachings of Islam and to get closer to Allah.

Muslim believes that fasting is a gateway to heaven and a strong fortress against the fire.
The act of fasting holds some specific rules and regulations such as intention to keep the fast, abstaining from food as well as from misdeeds and prohibited acts in Islam such as gambling, lying, misrepresentation and lot many which put the other person in trouble.
Bemefits of fasting includes – one gets closed to Allah, the power of self control is strengthened, the habit of charity is inculcated and a trial to avoid misdeeds.

THE PROPHET MOHAMMAD (PBUH) SAID : FAST IS A SHIELD , WHEN ONE OF YOU IS FASTING, HE SHOULD NEITHER BEHAVE IN AN OBSCENE MANNER NOR FOOLISHLY. IF A MAN FIGHTS OR ABUSES HIM, HE SHOULD SAY: I AM FASTING , I AM FASTING.

Accirding to my perspective, ramzan is like a curfew. Ramzan – curfew on ill acts. As curfew is the time when certain regulations and restrictions are applied so same as ramzan is the time where certain rules and regulations are applied which makes the fast valid.

I Sameena Kousar, for the cause of humanity would like to aware that it is the time of transformation. If one goes to perform salah ( namaz) and observes fast should be encouraged. We should not discourage them like is it for the month of ramzan or not. He / she is trying to walk on the principals of Islam so we should not hurt their sentiments rather than we should help them in transforming.
