When Maj Gen GD Bakshi’s age was 16½ he always use to read commando comics & decided to join the army anyhow. His Elder Brother Captain Srishti Raman Bakshi of 11 Jammu & Kashmir rifles was First to be martyred in 1965 War due to stepping on a M16 landmine as he was leading from the front & he was just 23. 1965 he lost his brother & 1967 he join the National Defence Academy by securing AIR-3 in the merit list(Just A year Half he lost his brother ). He decided to join the same regiment of his brother & was commissioned to 12 Jammu & Kashmir rifles . On the first night of his service he was deployed towards Dhaka For the 1971 Indo-Pak War as 2nd lieutenant .
He Suffered Bullets on every ranks of his service & As a Lt Colonel, he volunteered to be posted at Kaksar in Kargil in 1987, five kilometres from the Line of Control, where a massive intrusion had taken place.
He volunteered to be posted to Jammu & Kashmir’s toughest counter-terrorism sector, Kishtwar, where he served in the Rashtriya Rifles for 27 months, during which period several top terrorist commanders were eliminated.He was posted as Instructor at the Staff College, Wellington, Ooty, a very prestigious posting. He then returned to the Military Operations Directorate in time to plan Operation Vijay (Kargil, 1999), for which he received the Chief’s Commendation Card.
Before retirement, he taught for two and a half years at the National Defence College, New Delhi from where he was awarded a Phd for his work on limited war in the Indian subcontinent. When he Was retired & returned home , He With wet eyes said ” My Battle is over” To which His wife replied ” Your battle is just begun” .
