J&K: Rape accused lodged in jail dies of Covid complication

A 37-year-old man, who was lodged in a jail in north Kashmir district of Kupwara for alleged rape, on Monday died after recovering from COVID-19.

Official sources said that one Lateef Ahmad Mir was lodged in District Jail Kupwara since February 5 in a rape case. Mir tested positive for COVID-19 following which he was quarantined in the jail as per the guidelines, they said.

The accused tested negative for the infection few days back. However, on Monday morning, he developed complication following which he was referred to Sub District hospital Kupwara, where he was declared brought dead.

After completing all the legal and medical formalities, the body of the deceased would be handed over to his relatives for last rites, the sources said. “A case has been registered and investigation has been taken up in the incident,” they added.
