Rakesh Kumar, an Indian Para Archer belonging to a small village of Katra town in Jammu is appearing for the Tokyo Olympics this year. Eyeing a Gold medal this year, Rakesh’s parents have encouraged him for his journey and wish he succeeds in the Paralympics.
Rakesh, on January 19, 2009, faced an accident in Jammu when his car plunged 400 feet into a gorge. Out of nine people travelling in the car, 5 lost their lives. Though Rakesh escaped death that day, he was injured severely in the accident. The vehicle got crushed and he could not move his limbs. Rakesh learnt that he suffered a spinal injury – an injury which left him paralysed from the waist below.
“This is an opportunity for Rakesh to prove himself and his hard work. He’s faced lots of ups and downs. Lakhs were spent on his treatment and we were financially unable to arrange transport facilities during his training. Hopefully he wins a medal for the Nation and makes J&K public proud.” Rakesh’s Father told Media
Within a year of his practice on March 24 2018, Rakesh became the No 1 ranked archer in the W2 open category at the Rohtak national trials.
“Whenever I was in need of funds, my friends and coach helped me all the time. Since I have qualified for the Paralympics, now I am in TOPS, so there is no issue of funds. Now countrymen know about us, their feelings and sentiments are with us, and it is our duty to do justice with all,” he said to Times of India.
Rakesh is in the red hot form from the Paralympics after he bagged gold in the individual compound event at the seventh Fazza World Ranking tournament in Dubai.
