
Jammu: – Today, International Day of Forests was celebrated in Shakti Nagar, Jammu. The program was organized by Ashwani Suri, MD, Dewan Devi School. Mahant Rohit Shastri, President of Shri Kailakh Jyotish and Vedic Sansthan Trust, was the chief guest on the occasion. Tree plantation was also done during the function. Speaking on the occasion, Mahant Rohit Shastri highlighted the importance of trees and nature. He said that a tree gives many benefits to nature and man throughout its entire life. Trees also play an important role in temperature control. For this people should plant more and more saplings. Forest does not mean only trees but it is a whole complex living community which has been very important to mankind since prehistoric times. The forest consists of many trees and animals. Forestlands are home to many types of invertebrates also, like bacteria, fungi which play an important role in the recycling of nutrients in the land and forest. He finally urged the society to plant a sapling at least once a year.
In his address, Ashwani Suri said that to spread public awareness about the importance of trees, International Day of Forests is celebrated all over the world every year on 21st March. European Agriculture Organization in the year 1971 decided to observe 21 March every year as ‘ International Day of Forests” to preserve the forests.
